Investigation of Perioperative Anaphylaxis

Recovery After Anaphylaxis

The first priority in intra-operative anaphylaxis is your immediate management, stabilisation of the reaction and recovery period. Once this has occurred, detailed investigation of the episode needs to begin.

The first priority in intra-operative anaphylaxis is the immediate management and control of the reaction, transfer of the patient to the most appropriate location, and stabilisation until the reaction resolves. The usual place for this is the intensive care unit (ICU).

If you have had an episode of perioperative anaphylaxis, you may have been taken to the ICU after being “woken” from your anaesthesia, or you may have been taken there still under anaesthesia. In either case your first memories were most likely waking up in the ICU.

You may have woken up while still intubated (with a breathing tube in). Medical staff will have explained to you and probably your family that a suspected anaphylactic reaction has taken place.
