Interpretation of Results

Results are interpreted by assessing the change in skin at the testing site after 15-20 minutes. Results are usually clear, but occasionally borderline test results can occur. Advice can still be given, and an anaesthetic plan made in the event of borderline test results.

Sometimes further testing may be necessary to obtain very fine detail of allergy within a group or “family” of drugs, but usually a patient can safely return to surgery before this if the whole drug “family” can be avoided. Sometimes an oral drug challenge may be recommended.
