Dr Christian Van Nieuwenhuysen

Dr Christian Van Nieuwenhuysen is an Anaesthetist with additional experience in the investigation of peri-operative drug allergies, including anaphylaxis in response to anaesthetic agents. Christian is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA). Following completion of his anaesthesia training in Queensland, he undertook further training in allergy investigation and allergy testing techniques under the guidance of Anaesthetist Dr Elizabeth Maycock, a recognised expert and researcher in the field of anaesthetic allergy.

Like all anaesthetists, Christian spends most of his working life in the operating theatre, where his anaesthesia interests include regional anaesthesia and opioid-sparing techniques. He works alongside many surgeons, particularly in the areas of orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, colorectal robotic surgery, gynaecological surgery and neurosurgery.

Christian is one of only a small number of Anaesthetists in Australia and New Zealand with particular interest and expertise in the area of perioperative drug allergy management and investigation. His advanced training and experience in both anaesthesia and allergy enables him to offer the full spectrum of diagnosis, investigation, testing, and anaesthesia planning for return to the operating theatre after abandoned surgery due to anaphylaxis.

Due to his expertise in the field, Christian is frequently sought out for medico-legal opinions in the area of adverse drug reactions and critical events in the peri-operative period.

Christian has been an invited speaker, workshop convenor and educator at both the regional and national level to audiences of fellow anaesthetists, surgeons, junior doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, nurses and students.

Dr Van Nieuwenhuysen also has a special interest in antibiotic allergy, responsible use of antibiotics, and antibiotic allergy “de-labelling” – the process of removing inaccurate antibiotic allergies from a patient’s medical record.
